What is a Benefit? Print

ImageThe term "benefit" is so well understood that it doesn't require defining.  Well that is what most people assume because everyone knows what a benefit is, or do they?  Next time you hear the benefit word being used, just ask the speaker what they understand a benefit to be.  You might be surprised.

Ask anyone what they want from their next consumer purchase and they will usually talk in performance terms; better this, less that etc, i.e. they talk in terms of performance that has some sort of value to them.  We take this notion for our definition of benefit and define it simply by:

"a performance improvement valued by a stakeholder ."
